Icon Intense Pulsed Laser (IPL)

IPL skin rejuvenation, also known as IPL photorejuvenation, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure which uses an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) to reduce pigmentation and discolouration, leaving the skin brighter, more even, and with youthful clarity. IPL pigmentation removal is not just for the face – our experienced nurses can successfully treat larger areas of sun damage on the body such as the chest and arms. Our chosen IPL system is the state-of-the art Icon platform for Cynosure, offering extremely effective and proven technology.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL, similar to laser, utilises the power of light to treat a multitude of skin concerns. Unlike laser, which utilises one collimated and coherent wavelength of light at a time, IPL delivers a spectrum of light into the tissue. Different wavelengths of light are picked up by various targets in the skin – water, pigment, or haemoglobin (red blood cells). Using a broad spectrum of wavelengths can therefore be used to treat multiple kinds of pigmentation, and multiple other conditions simultaneously. In addition to sunspots, age spots, freckles and discolouration, IPL can address redness, broken veins and capillaries, injury scarring, post-surgical scars, and mild skin sagging. During treatment, IPL energy is delivered into the skin, having multiple outcomes. Energy is absorbed by pigment deposits in the tissue, which break up and shatter in response. Unable to continue surviving, they are pushed upwards through the skin’s layers until they reach the surface, where they flake off – much like a scab. Some of the energy is also attracted to blood, such is that inside burst capillaries and spider veins in the face. The IPL energy damages the vessel walls, which collapse and are transported out of the body’s waste system. As a third added bonus, wavelengths within the IPL energy spectrum are attracted to water molecules in the tissue. This interaction causes heat in the tissue, prompting the formation of new collagen fibres and having a skin tightening and plumping result.

Am I Suitable
For IPL?

Most adults above the age of 18 are suitable for IPL pigmentation removal. Some medications such as Roaccutane may, however, render the treatment unsuitable due to compromised skin healing or sun sensitisation. You must discuss your medical history with your doctor to determine if you are not a suitable candidate for this treatment. You also cannot undergo IPL if you have experienced sunburn, significant sun exposure, or fake tan within the past 4 weeks. We also recommend that you undergo a skin cancer prior to light-based treatments – these are recommended once per year by healthcare professionals.

How Many Treatments
Will I Need?

IPL for pigmentation typically requires a series of treatments to significantly reduce pigment. This varies from person to person depending upon the condition of your skin, the quantity/density of your pigmented lesions, and the depth of pigment in the skin. Deeper-lying pigment is more difficult to treat than superficial pigment. Normally, you will need three to six treatments spaced roughly four weeks apart.

How Long Will The
Results Last?

The longevity of the results differs from person to person, but can last for several years. This will also largely depend on how well you care for your skin at home. After removing pigmentation with IPL, it is crucial to prevent it from recurring by using pigment-inhibiting skincare products, and applying sunscreen daily. Without these, your pigment is likely to return fairly quickly. To help achieve long lasting results, maintenance IPL sessions every 6-12 months are also recommended.
