Whether it be due to heavy earring wearing, an injury involving torn earlobe, or intentional stretching/gauging of the lobes, surgical repair may be considered to help restore the appearance of the earlobe, following assessment and consultation.

What Does Earlobe Repair Involve?

There are several techniques which can be used to repair tears or reduce the size of enlarged earlobes. This will depend on the current state of your earlobes and the goal you wish to achieve. For small tears and repairs, just the outer layer of skin on each side of the tear may be removed, allowing it to heal together with sutures or skin adhesive. For very stretched ears, excess skin will require surgical removal and a complete reshape of the earlobe.

A consultation with your doctor is required to assess your earlobe condition, suitability for surgery, and the most appropriate technique for your goals.

Is It Painful & Are there risks?

Your earlobe repair procedure will involve anaesthetic, the type of amount of which will be determined by the size and nature of your injury/stretching. Instances involving removal of stretched tissue will of course result in slightly more downtime, discomfort and sutures.

As with all surgical procedures, earlobe repair carries potential risks, including infection, scarring, asymmetry, and reaction to anaesthetic. Your doctor will discuss these risks, alternatives, and the informed consent process with you during consultation. Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed.

What Can I Expect
Afterwards?

This procedure is typically well-tolerated, with some minimal tenderness and swelling in the 1-2 weeks following. In most cases you may resume normal activities right away, but avoid baths, swimming pools, saunas and hot tubs, and refrain from wearing helmets and other headgear, for two weeks. It is crucial to follow your doctor’s aftercare advice diligently to avoid infection, and reduce the risk of keloid scarring. You will be instructed to wash the area/s with soapy water daily, and take care when applying makeup and styling hair.
