Skinnotion is proud to offer PicoSure laser treatments, the world’s gold standard laser for pigmentation including melasma. PicoSure’s market-leading technology combines multiple laser wavelengths, including 532nm, 755nm, and 1064nm. Our experienced Skinnotion nurses ntilise these various wavelengths to successfully treat not only pigmentation but multiple skin concerns including acne scarring and advanced reduction of skin ageing such as lines and wrinkles.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a pigmentary disorder, resulting in large clusters of pigment deposits in the skin. This is generally driven by hormonal activity, which is why melasma is so common during and after pregnancy. Melasma is also exacerbated by heat and sun exposure. These dense clusters of pigmentation can be very difficult to remove, and must be kept at bay with a strict home skincare routine as well as daily sunscreen application – even when indoors.

How does PicoSure Work?

PicoSure delivers a targeted photomechanical response to the skin. Pigmentation, including melasma, freckles, and age spots, is broken up into tiny fragments which allows for the body to eliminate it safely. Not all pigmentation is the same, and needs to be approached in an individualised way. This is especially the case for melasma, which is notoriously tricky to treat. With multiple wavelengths and spot sizes, your PicoSure treatments will be customised to your specific needs.

PicoSure vs Traditional Laser Treatments

PicoSure laser enables non-surgical, non-invasive skin treatment with less discomfort and downtime of traditional laser skin treatments. Traditional lasers can produce intense heat in the tissue, which not only increases downtime and discomfort, but increases the chances of actually stimulating more pigment as a result. PicoSure combats this by delivering laser energy differently to other modalities. Picosecond laser energy is delivered in powerful, ultra-short pulses, which effectively shatters pigmentation like tattoos and sun damage without the heat lingering, minimising damage to the surrounding tissue. This type of energy delivery is extremely important when it comes to melasma, which is often aggravated and made worse by heat. Therefore, laser melasma treatments should be approached with caution, using leading technology like PicoSure to reduce these risks.

What Can I Expect During PicoSure
Pigmentation Treatments?

Most treatment sessions last around 30 minutes. Depending on your skin type and the severity and depth of your pigmentation, multiple sessions may be required to achieve noticeable, lasting results. PicoSure laser is not considered painful, but topical anaesthetic cream can be administered to reduce discomfort if you choose. Typically you will experience a warm, flicking or snapping sensation as the laser energy is dispersed into the skin.

What Is The Downtime After PicoSure?

Compared to traditional non-ablative resurfacing lasers for pigmentation, PicoSure is less painful during the treatment and has less associated downtime. Generally, the skin will feel slightly warm and appear pink or red for several hours following your treatment, which usually dissipates by the next day. When pigment absorbs photoenergy, it often changes colour. After PicoSure, your pigmentation will usually appear darker, either grey or black-brown. This will happen right away, and will usually continue to darken over the coming days. Over the next 1-2 weeks, some of the pigment will be pushed up to the surface of the skin and eventually flake off. It is important to avoid picking or scrubbing during this time. You may resume your normal activities straight after treatment, ensuring gentle skin products and no intensive exercise for the following 24 hours. It is absolutely crucial to apply sun protection daily, and to keep skin hydrated and avoid exfoliating agents for 5-7 days following treatment. It is crucial for the reduction and continued maintenance of melasma that your laser treatments be combined with pigment-inhibiting homecare products. If specialised products and daily sunscreen are not used at home, there is a high risk of your melasma returning.
