Lipomas are common benign fatty lumps that develop beneath the skin. Where appropriate, surgical removal may be considered after clinical assessment to address discomfort, growth, or cosmetic concern.
What is A Lipoma?
Lipomas are benign (non-cancerous) lumps of fatty tissue that can develop under the skin. They are generally soft, mobile and painless, though some may grow over time or become bothersome due to discomfort or appearance.
Lipoma Removal
Lipoma removal is a minor surgical procedure to excise a lipoma using a small incision, typically under local anaesthesia.
The goal is complete removal of the fatty lump while minimising scar visibility.
As with all surgical procedures, lipoma removal carries potential risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and temporary numbness or nerve irritation near the treatment site. Your doctor will discuss these risks, the informed consent process, and alternatives with you during consultation.
Is Lipoma Removal Right for You?
Removal may be recommended if a lipoma:
- Is enlarging or causing discomfort
- Affects movement or everyday activities
- Causes cosmetic concern
- Requires definitive diagnosis through histopathology
Following consultation and assessment, eligible patients may undergo this procedure with our cosmetic doctor, Dr Nguyen.
What to Expect
- The area is numbed with local anaesthetic to ensure comfort
- An incision is made to remove the lipoma in full
- The skin is closed with fine sutures to support healing.
- You will be provided with personalised aftercare instructions
- Follow-up appointments are arranged as clinically required
Recovery & Aftercare
After lipoma removal you may expect:
- Mild tenderness, swelling or bruising - typically resolving within days
- A fine-line scar that gradually fades
- Gradual return to normal activities as directed by your treating doctor.
Following aftercare instructions supports smooth healing and reduces risk of complications.
Will My Lipoma Return?
Complete surgical excision makes recurrence at the same site uncommon; however, new lipomas can develop in other areas.
