Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure performed to remove existing breast implants without replacement. Some patients choose removal for medical or personal reasons, including a desire to return to their natural breast size and shape.
Breast implant removal surgery at Skinnotion is performed by Dr Peter Tran, MED0001668228, General Registration.
What to Expect: Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal surgery is performed for patients who wish to remove their existing breast implants without replacing them with new ones. Depending on individual circumstances, surgery may also involve removal of the surrounding capsule (capsulectomy) or any leaked implant material.
For patients concerned about excess skin or changes in breast shape following implant removal, breast lift surgery may also be performed at the same time to help reshape the breast area.
Breast implant removal can be performed on both saline and silicone implants and may be considered for a range of medical or personal reasons.
Some patients report symptoms they believe may be associated with their breast implants, sometimes referred to as breast implant illness (BII) or systemic symptoms associated with breast implants (SSBI). Current scientific evidence has not established a causal relationship between breast implants and these symptoms, and research in this area is ongoing.
Patients experiencing symptoms they believe may be associated with their implants are encouraged to discuss these concerns with their doctor to explore potential causes and determine whether implant removal may be appropriate for their individual circumstances.
As with any surgical procedure, breast implant removal carries risks and may not be suitable for everyone. Suitability for surgery, expected outcomes and potential risks will be discussed during your consultation.
How Do I Prepare For Breast Implant Removal Surgery?
You should be in good physical health prior to surgery, and at a stable weight, as weight gain or loss can impact your breast tissue. A thorough physical and psychological evaluation is conducted prior to any surgical procedure. Your doctor will advise on medications to be ceased beforehand, including herbal supplements such as ginkgo and St John’s Wort. You will be required to stop smoking or vaping for several weeks prior to your procedure, and you may be prescribed antibiotics ahead of surgery.
We recommend preparing a recovery space at home with bedding, ice packs and a thermometer, and arranging for a support person to stay with you for the first 24 hours. Compression garments will be provided and must be worn as directed, and strenuous activity or heavy lifting must be avoided during recovery.
Most patients experience swelling and bruising in the breast area for around two weeks following surgery. Your recovery timeline will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
What Are The Risks?
All surgical procedures carry various risks. Scarring is an expected part of surgery, and your doctor will provide aftercare guidance to support healing. Infection is another possible risk of any surgery, and following aftercare instructions closely is essential.
The following are possible risks associated with breast implant removal surgery:
- Fluid accumulation around the incision site/s
- Allergic reaction to sutures or other medical materials
- Variation in breast and/or nipple sensation
- Keloid scarring
- Risks associated with anaesthesia, such as allergic reaction or cardiovascular complications
- Deep vein thrombosis
Your doctor will discuss these risks in detail during consultation and provide information to help you make an informed decision.
When Can I Return To Work?
Most patients take at least a few days off work, depending on the individual and the nature of their work. Your recovery and return-to-work timeline will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
